A Brief History of UFO Sightings in Los Angeles

This article originally appeared on la.curbed.com.

Late last week, Angelenos were confused/awed/terrified by the sight of a mysterious streak of light illuminating the night sky across its entire length. For hours, no official explanation was offered, leading everyone in town to speculate wildly on Twitter about what it was. It turns out that it was the Navy testing their Trident II missile, which is used to deter nuclear attacks; to prevent the prying eyes of the Russians, the Navy released no details to the public prior to the launch. It was a reasonable, if not slightly off-putting explanation, but it didn’t take long for people to cry conspiracy. Was it a comet? Was it an alien? What was the government hiding? We may never know, but for some conspiracy theorists, speculation will probably continue for years. And the Trident incident is not alone—Los Angeles actually has a rich history of unexplained phenomenon in its skies. Here’s a rundown of LA’s best UFO stories throughout history:

Antarctic UFO mystery deepens after researchers ‘find tanks guarding alien crash site’

This article originally appeared on express.co.uk.

Express.co.uk revealed earlier this year the claims of another UFO hunter that he had ‘found the crash site and wreckage of an alien craft” that he believes may have been downed in the Antarctic.

Valentin Degterev from the city of Nizhny Tagil in central Russia, says he found the UGO (unidentified ground object) online using Google Earth.

But now fellow researchers have dug out satellite images of the same site, just off Willy Field Road, which were taken in April and December 2011.

The channel says it found the pictures which they believe show four tanks in a line facing the strange crack in the snow on Google Earth – as if a UFO has skidded to a halt after an emergency landing.

Norway Has a New Passion: Ghost Hunting

This article originally appeared on NY Times.

MOSS, Norway — Like many Europeans, Marianne Haaland Bogdanoff, a travel agency manager in this southern Norwegian town, does not go to church, except maybe at Christmas, and is doubtful about the existence of God.

But when “weird things” — inexplicable computer breakdowns, strange smells and noises and complaints from staff members of constant headaches — started happening at the ground-floor travel office, she slowly began to put aside her deep skepticism about life beyond the here and now. After computer experts, electricians and a plumber all failed to find the cause of her office’s troubles, she finally got help from a clairvoyant who claimed powers to communicate with the dead. The headaches and other problems all vanished.

Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute Release First Observations From “Alien Megastructure” Star

This article originally appeared on IFLScience.

Take down the “Welcome Aliens!” bunting and pack away the cosmic red carpet. New observations have suggested that the “alien megastructure” spotted around a distant star is probably not alien at all, and likely has a more mundane (but probably still interesting) natural explanation. Here come the pretzels.

The star system KIC 8462852, 1,400 light-years away, hit the news big time when Jason Wright, an astrophysicist from Pennsylvania State University, suggested to The Atlantic that a huge dip in light seen from the star – up to 20 percent of its light – could be artificial in origin. Naturally, this had people dreaming of Dyson spheres, vast theoretical structures that could potentially harness the power of entire stars, and other exciting extraterrestrial constructs.

Viewer Sends Mysterious Video and Asks; Is This A Ghost?

This article originally appeared on NBC Right Now.

KENNEWICK, WA. — Do you believe in ghosts? If not, we’ve got a story for you that might not change you mind. But it could make you think.

The video isn’t long or complex, just 10 seconds of a shadowy figure moving one way, and then moving back. The question is what do you think it is?

The ghouls and goblins from Halloween may be put away. But real life ghosts, if they exist, may never go away. A viewer who wished to remain anonymous sent us this surveillance video from their front yard with one question, “Is this a ghost?”

“There is a basic humanistic outline to it,” Richard Flynn of CenterState Paranormal Investigators said. “So initial reaction I would have to say there is something behind it.”

Are There Signals Coming from Deep Space?

This article originally appeared on Huffington Post.

The star KIC 8462852 may have an unpronounceable name, but just about everyone with an interest in aliens has been talking about it. As of today, they can elaborate their discourse with some new results.

The conversations started about three weeks ago, when a paper written by a small battalion of astronomers pointed out that this star – an imposing 1400 light-years from where you’re sitting – occasionally dips its headlights. Every few weeks or months, it will blink, temporarily dimming to as little as 80 percent of its normal brightness. There is no indication (and little likelihood) that this bizarre behavior is caused by planets orbiting the star. Even Jupiter-size worlds would only block about one percent of the star’s light.

UFOs Near Delhi Airport Puts India Military On High Alert

This article originally appeared on The Huffington Post.

Normally, only regular air traffic is allowed to fly in and out of and around major airports. But, lately, something else — something irregular — has shown up at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport (pictured above), putting several official security agencies on “high alert.”

On Oct. 30, IGI air traffic control (ATC) viewed suspicious flying objects three times near and around the airport, reports hindustantimes.com.

According to the newspaper, “Sources said the Indian Air Force even pressed a chopper into action to check the flying object. But the helicopter could not find anything.”

The ghosts of Finn’s Point National Cemetery

This article originally appeared on nj.com.

Even though Halloween has come and gone, the spooky stories that liven up the creepiest time of year don’t disappear after the last jack-o-lantern shrivels up and gets tossed onto the compost pile.

Ghost stories are all around us everyday. Some may even be right in our backyards.

On Oct. 24, Jersey Unique Minds Paranormal Society and Revolution Tours hosted its fourth annual Historic Ghost Tour of Salem County.

The tour — which was the event that got me involved with JUMPS three years ago — combines historical fact with legendary ghost stories about several locations in Salem County.

‘Alien Megastructure’ Mystery May Soon Be Solved

This article originally appeared on Yahoo.

The mystery behind a strangely dimming star could soon be solved.

Astronomers around the world are keeping a close eye on the star KIC 8462852, which has dimmed dramatically numerous times over the past few years, dropping in brightness by up to 22 percent. These big dips have spurred speculation that the star may be surrounded by some type of alien megastructure — a hypothesis that will be put to the test if and when KIC 8462852 dims again.

Bigfoot Believers meet in Hot Springs for the inaugural Big Sky Bigfoot Conference

This article originally appeared on Flathead Beacon.

HOT SPRINGS – The morning of Oct. 24 was one of chill and fog, with gray, opaque clouds hanging low over Flathead Lake and the pavement on U.S. Highway 93 punctuated with fresh, dark blood.

Sure, the gore was just a sign that the local deer have begun the annual process of losing their minds during mating season and are running into the road, but since I was on my way to a conference about monsters, it was easy to let the mind wander to spookier and more sinister explanations.

Beacon photographer Greg Lindstrom and I headed out early that Saturday morning, driving the windy road to Hot Springs, where the inaugural Big Sky Bigfoot Conference was scheduled to take place at the historic Symes Hot Springs Hotel.

Plausibility of ghosts offers otherworldly possibilities

This article originally appeared on The Chicago Tribune.

Kristy Hansen adjusted her special flashlight and set it on top of the long-abandoned cot inside the old Lake County Jail in Crown Point.

As legend goes, that rusty, empty cot was once used by none other than John Dillinger, who now has a museum featuring his life and death just a few blocks away in the old county courthouse.

As midnight approached, Dillinger’s old jail cell was quiet as a cemetery except for a handful of disruptive guests, including me.

“Can you let us know you’re here?” Hansen asked the empty air as we stared at that flashlight. “Can you turn it on?”

Hansen is by far the most polite ghost hunter I’ve ever watched, as if she was asking her sickly grandmother to turn on a bedroom light. Instead, she asked the ghost of John Dillinger — or any other ghost in that monstrous old building — for a sign from the other world. It could be from a ghostly jail guard, a long-deceased inmate or anyone else whose spirit was still incarcerated at that spot.

“Are you here with us?” Hansen asked again.

Signs of alien life? Mysterious star stirs controversy

This article originally appeared on Yahoo News.

Washington (AFP) – Mysterious light on a distant star could be a sign of alien civilisation, some astronomers have claimed, stirring controversy among their peers.

Not so fast, said NASA.

“The mysterious star, KIC 8462852, does have an odd light curve,” said Steve Howell, a US space agency scientist working on the Kepler space telescope’s planet-hunting mission, which launched in 2009 but lost its key orientation abilities in 2013.

“It does not look like a normal exoplanet or binary star light curve. However, I think that saying that it immediately is alien is a bit of a stretch,” Howell said in an email to AFP.

Has Kepler Discovered an Alien Megastructure?

This article originally appeared on Discovery News.

NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope is tasked with finding small, rocky worlds orbiting distant stars. However, exoplanets aren’t the only thing Kepler can detect — stellar flares, star spots and dusty planetary rings can also pop up in the mission’s observations.

But there’s also been speculation that Kepler may have the ability to detect more than natural phenomena; if they’re out there, Kepler may also detect the signature of artificial structures orbiting other stars. Imagine an advanced civilization that’s well up on the Kardashev scale and has the ability to harness energy directly from its star. This hypothetical alien civilization may want to construct vast megastructures, like supersized solar arrays in orbit around their host star, that could be so big that they blot out a sizable fraction of starlight as they pass in front.

Terrifying moment ‘Black-Eyed Ghost Child’ caught on camera roaming through woods

This article originally appeared on mirror.co.uk.

A team of ghostbusters claims to have captured the Black-Eyed Child of Cannock Chase on camera – after spending six hours searching for paranormal activity.

After setting up its cameras, the team trawled through Cannock Chase, Staffordshire, in the hope of capturing a ghostly apparition on film.

And the group is now claiming it was successful in its quest, and have evidence which it say proves it.

UFOs hounding International Space Station’ or evidence of ‘secret Nasa tests

This article originally appeared on www.express.co.uk.

Several videos, said to have been taken from Nasa live cameras on the ISS which is in orbit 250 miles above earth, containing mysterious Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) have been posted on YouTube and paranormal websites.

The frequency of so-called UFOs on the cameras of the ISS, which houses six astronauts, is increasing so much according to conspiracists, that some now speculate they may be evidence of “secret tests” carried out by Nasa.

The latest is said to have been filmed on October 1 and shows what is described as “a glowing object moving towards the space station, but far below its orbit.”

Planet Paranormal Investigations explores the Queen Mary and other haunted SoCal spots

This article originally appeared on www.sgvtribune.com.

It was dark and Bob Davis was alone, locked in a cell on D Block, the maximum security section of Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Suddenly someone grabbed his shoulder sharply while whispering in his ear, “You’re mine.” Davis banged at the cell door begging to be let out.

This family trip would change Davis’ life. The 13-year-old didn’t believe in ghosts when he agreed to be locked into a cell during a guided tour of Alcatraz nor did he breathe a word of what he experienced to his family and the rest of the tour group after he was let out, but that afternoon Davis read his first book about the paranormal and began the path to his part-time career.
